Zengyi Zhao (b. 1999, Jinan, China) received his BFA from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and an MFA from ArtCenter College of Design in Los Angeles. His practice centers on the visual forms and structures of modernity, spectacle, and consumer culture. Through his imagery, he investigates simulacra, the ways hyperreal environments estrange people from their surroundings, and the precarious situations individuals encounter amid rapidly transforming social conditions. Often taking landscapes and everyday spaces as points of departure, Zengyi’s work reveals the subtle yet tense relationships between people and systemic forces, while reflecting on how contemporary visual experience is constructed, disciplined, and reproduced.
